Agriculture recruitment in Mauritius for seasonal and permanent teams

Agriculture recruitment in Mauritius needs to follow the crop and the work calendar. Indian Ocean Millenium Partners sources farm labourers, crop specialists and plantation workers from Nepal and India for seasonal and long-term placements. Tell us what you grow, which tasks need support and who will supervise the team.

Our manpower consultancy in Vacoas-Phoenix coordinates consultation, sourcing, screening, placement documents and follow-up. Harvest work and year-round maintenance need different experience. Specify location, duration and working conditions before choosing headcount.

Which agricultural workers can you recruit?

Mauritian agriculture includes sugarcane, tea, fruit and vegetables. Build your shortlist around the crop and production method rather than a general claim of farming experience.

  • Farm labourers. Planting, weeding, irrigation support, harvesting and sorting, according to the tasks assigned by your farm supervisor.
  • Crop specialists. Candidates with relevant experience in crop monitoring, nursery work or protected cultivation, matched to the production system.
  • Plantation workers. Field preparation, crop upkeep and harvesting duties for the plantation concerned. State whether the work is manual and identify the tools used.

Separate field duties from machinery operation. Experience with one crop or tool does not establish competence with every farm activity.

When should you plan seasonal farm recruitment?

The government’s agriculture FAQs place the usual sugarcane harvest between June and December. Other crops follow their own schedules; the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute’s Agricultural Production and Market Information System (APMIS) provides a crop calendar. Use your planting programme and expected harvest dates to estimate staffing, rather than applying one season to every farm.

Plan induction dates and tasks outside harvest. Allow for screening, documents and permit decisions before fixing travel. Discuss revised duties and dates with candidates if weather or crop development changes the programme.

How should you assess experience and prepare the workplace?

Ask candidates to describe crops, tools and tasks they have actually handled. Discuss maturity checks, careful picking, irrigation routines or sorting against your needs. Explain expected output alongside quality standards, supervision and training. Agree how instructions will be understood when workers and supervisors use different languages.

The Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations’ risk assessment guidance helps employers identify hazards and controls. For your farm, assess lifting, cutting tools, heat, wet ground and moving equipment. Plan drinking water, rest arrangements, protective equipment and transport. State any early starts, weekend duties and accommodation arrangements in the brief; hours depend on the actual assignment.

What permit arrangements apply to agricultural hires?

Ordinary Work Permit applications are submitted through National E-Licensing Platform (NELS). Permission in Principle is no longer required and the quota system has been abolished; employers still need evidence that local recruitment has not met the need. Contracts require vetting at monthly salaries of MUR 50,000 or less. Seasonal work still needs the applicable authorisation.

Frequently asked questions

Can you discuss both seasonal and permanent farm teams?

We can discuss temporary staffing, project-based recruitment or permanent staffing against the duties and duration. Availability and arrival depend on selection and approvals.

Are crop specialists interchangeable across farms?

No. Match experience to the crop, irrigation method and growing conditions. Your interview should establish what the candidate can do independently and what needs instruction.

Do workers pay recruitment fees?

No. Under the Private Recruitment Agencies Act 2023, workers pay no recruitment fees. The employer bears recruitment costs, including travel to and from Mauritius.
