Supermarket and retail staff recruitment in Mauritius

Busy checkouts, stocked shelves and accurate deliveries depend on clearly defined jobs. Indian Ocean Millenium Partners sources skilled and semi-skilled workers from Nepal and India for supermarket and retail employers in Mauritius. Start with the tasks each employee will handle, the store layout and the support available on each shift.

From Vacoas-Phoenix, our manpower consultancy supports consultation, sourcing, screening, document preparation and placement follow-up. The recruitment brief should distinguish customer service from stock handling and food preparation.

Last reviewed October 2026. Rules change, so confirm the current requirements with the authorities before you apply.

Which supermarket and retail roles can you recruit?

Build your requirement around the work at the till, on the shop floor and behind the store. Our coverage includes these roles:

  • Shelf stockers. Replenishment, product rotation, shelf labels and reporting damaged stock.
  • Cashiers. Checkout operation, payment handling and customer queries within the authority you assign.
  • Store supervisors. Shift coordination, task allocation, stock checks and escalation to store management.
  • Warehouse personnel. Goods receiving, picking, inventory records and preparation of deliveries to the shop floor.

Specify any fresh-food, bakery or deli duties separately. A cashier who occasionally handles food may need a different induction from an employee working only with packaged household goods.

How should you assess candidates and organise shifts?

State pay, hours, rest arrangements, transport, accommodation and the languages needed for customer contact. Describe weekend or public-holiday coverage where required by your opening schedule. Use your sales and delivery records to plan additional staffing rather than assuming a fixed seasonal peak.

Ask candidates to explain a stock discrepancy, a payment error or an out-of-date item. Discuss the screening needed for each role during consultation. A supervisor interview should explore handovers and delegation; a warehouse interview should cover receiving records and safe handling. Identify who will train new staff on your checkout and inventory systems.

Which food hygiene and workplace checks matter?

The Food Regulations 2024 provide for a Food Handler’s Certificate and approved food safety and hygiene training for food handlers, subject to the stated training exemption. Identify which duties fall within those rules and confirm the arrangements with the Ministry of Health before assigning food work.

For cold-room work, review the protective clothing and exposure provisions in the distributive trades rules. Include lifting, delivery traffic and wet-floor controls in your store induction. Check the current employment rules applicable to your establishment when preparing the roster and contract.

What permit steps should a retail employer plan?

The employer files ordinary Work Permit applications through National E-Licensing Platform (NELS) on the Economic Development Board (EDB) portal. A vetted contract is required at monthly salaries of MUR 50,000 or less. Permission in Principle and quota ratios no longer apply. Keep evidence that local recruitment has not met the need. Use our hiring guide for the full process and assess any qualifying Occupation Permit role separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recruit for a new store opening?

Yes. Share the opening programme, headcount by role and supervisor availability. Project-Based Recruitment can support the agreed staffing brief; arrival dates remain subject to authority decisions.

Do workers pay recruitment fees?

No. Under the Private Recruitment Agencies Act 2023, workers pay no recruitment fees and the employer bears recruitment costs, including travel to and from Mauritius.

Can warehouse staff operate any equipment?

Describe each machine and the tasks involved. Confirm the applicable authorisation and competence requirements before assigning equipment duties; warehouse experience alone does not establish suitability.
